It was one of the most influential empires in Indian history, spanning from the early 16th century to the mid-19th century.

The Mughal Empire was founded by Babur, a descendant of Timur and Genghis Khan. He invaded India in 1526 and defeated the Sultan of Delhi, establishing the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent. Akbar, Babur's grandson, is often regarded as the greatest Mughal emperor. He implemented policies of religious tolerance, abolished discriminatory taxes against non-Muslims, and initiated various administrative reforms. His reign saw the expansion of the empire to its greatest territorial extent. The Mughal Empire was a golden age of art, architecture, and literature. It witnessed the flourishing of Mughal painting, characterized by intricate detail, vibrant colors, and themes ranging from court scenes to portraits. The Mughal Empire began to decline in the 18th century due to various factors, including internal strife, economic instability, and invasions by foreign powers such as the British East India Company. The empire finally came to an end with the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny.
